Ford . How to Install a Water Pump in a Honda PreludeYou can prevent one of the major causes of engine overheating in your Honda Prelude with regular leak inspections. This includes checking your water pump. An occasional drip is no cause for alarm, but a drizzle means its time for a replacement. A leaking water pump can cause overheating and major engine damage, so replace it at the first sign of failing. Difficulty:Moderate Instructions Things You'll Need Screwdriver Jack and jack stands Large container Adjustable wrench Grease pencil Chisel Shop rags Water pump O-ring High temperature automotive sealant Water pump bolts Torque wrench CoolantRemove the Water Pump Step by Step : 1 Lift the hood and disconnect the power to the Honda Prelude. Using a screwdriver, unscrew the clamp that connects the negative battery cable to the battery post. Position the cable away from the battery post. Jack up the car and place jack stands underneath to secure it while working. 2 Drain the coolant system by first twisting off the radiator's cap slowly to release pressure. Locate the drain plug at the bottom of the radiator, just behind the grill. Place an empty container under the drain plug, remove the plug with an adjustable wrench and drain the radiator. 3 Use a grease pencil to mark the position of the pulleys on the timing belt. Then, begin taking off the parts leading to the water pump. Use an adjustable wrench to disconnect the timing belt and water pump retaining bolts. 4 Undo the five bolts securing the water pump to the Honda Prelude's engine. Use a chisel to gently pry apart the two pieces. 5 Remove the gasket, which may be in pieces on both the water pump and the engine. Wipe the pieces away with a clean shop rag, if possible or scrape them away with the chisel, if needed. Install the Water Pump Step by Step : 1 Spread a bead of high temperature automotive sealant on the new water pump, in the place where it meets the engine mount. Put the o-ring over the sealant on the pump and hold it in place as you mount the new water pump on the side of the Honda Prelude's engine. 2 Keep the water pump in place as you secure it with five new bolts. Tighten each in any order with 108 inch pounds torque. Reassemble the rest of the parts in the order you took them off the Honda Prelude. Replace any parts that appear worn or damaged as you go. 3 Replace the drain plug and refill the radiator with the amount and type of coolant specified in your owner's manual. Remove the jack stands and lower the jack. Reconnect the negative battery cable to the post and tighten the screw on the clamp. 4 Reconnect the radio and input the code. Start the Honda Prelude's engine and check for leaks. Then, close the hood and clean up any spilled coolant. 5 Dispose of the drained coolant. The old radiator fluid is a hazardous material. You may need to contact your local sanitation department for disposal options. Tips & Warnings You must have the security code for your radio handy. When you reconnect the battery, the radio will ask for a security code before operating. It's a security measure that can only be overcome with the correct code.
Ford . How to Install a Water Pump in a Hyundai SonataIn a Hyundai Sonata, a failing water pump may also cause other problems. The timing belt uses the water pump as a pulley, so you should change the two parts simultaneously. With a little mechanical knowledge and the right tools and replacement parts, installing a new water pump isn't too difficult. Difficulty:Moderate Instructions Things You'll Need Screwdriver Jack Jack stands Resealable container Adjustable wrench Shop towels Water pump High temperature automotive sealant Gasket Torque wrench Water pump bolts CoolantTake Out the Old Pump Step by Step : 1 Open the hood and use a screwdriver to unscrew the clamp that connects the negative battery cable to the battery post. Remove the cable. Use a jack to elevate the Hyundai Sonata and jack stands to shore up the jack. 2 Release the pressure in the radiator by removing the cap. Take out the drain plug located underneath the radiator. Catch the coolant in a resealable container. 3 Disconnect the parts leading to the water pump on the Hyundai Sonata using an adjustable wrench. In the following order, this includes: accessory drive belts, radiator hose, bypass hose, water pump pulley, front cover, timing belt and alternator bracket. As you remove each part, lay it out, alongside its bolts, in the order disconnected. 4 Undo the bolts securing the water pump to the engine. Clean off the mount after removing the pump, using a shop rag. Inspect the area for cracks. Install the New Pump Step by Step : 1 Place high temperature automotive sealant on the new water pump, in the place that it meets the engine block. Position the new gasket on the sealant on the pump. Hold it in place as you mount the new water pump on the side of the Hyundai Sonata's engine. 2 Tighten the bolts with a torque wrench to the torque required for your engine size. They are as follows: 1.5L SOHC engines get 105 to 132 inch pounds; 1.5L, 1.6L DOHC, 1.8L, 2.0L or 2.4L engines get 14 to 20 foot pounds; and the 2.5 L engines get 11 to 16 foot pounds of torque. 3 Reassemble the rest of the parts in the order you took them off the Hyundai Sonata. Replace any parts that appear worn or damaged, if needed. 4 Replace the radiator's drain plug and refill the radiator with the amount and type of coolant specified in your owner's manual. Remove the jack stands. Lower the car back to the ground. 5 Replace and tighten the negative battery cable to the post with the screwdriver. Crank the Hyundai Sonata's engine and check for leaks. Then, close the hood. *Figure 14-9: How to install a hose. If the hose is a vacuum hose: You'll find literally nothing in it. Just loosen the clamps, remove the hose, slide the new clamps on the new hose, slip the ends of the hose over whatever they connect to, and tighten the clamps. If the hose is a fuel hose: When the engine is shut off, most of the fuel flows back to the fuel tank. So you need only to stick the first end of the hose you remove into a clean can and allow whatever fuel remains in the hose to drain into it. When you finish the job, pour the fuel in the can back into your gas tank. (If you've managed to contaminate the fuel, put it into a container with a tight-fitting lid and take it to a toxic waste disposal center.) Obviously, you're not going to smoke while you do this job! Also, if any fuel leaks onto the ground, clean it up thoroughly and dispose of the rags immediately so that they won't be a fire hazard. . Chapter 14: Keeping Your Car from Getting Heartburn 2 1 C If the hose contains liquid under pressure: To prevent leaks, some manuals suggest putting a water-resistant sealant on the ends of the fittings to which the hose connects. Because these sealants tend to make the hoses difficult to remove when you need to replace them again, I suggest that you try it without sealant first. In most cases, if the hose is the right one and the clamps are on tight enough, you should be able to get by without it. If the hose leaks, you can always go back and use the sealant as recommended. If the hose is a radiator or heater hose: You'll need a bucket or pan that holds at least 2 gallons of liquid to catch the coolant and water that will run out of the system. 706

If you don't know why, see "Keeping coolant out of the mouths of babes and small animals" earlier in this chapter. If you haven't flushed your cooling system and replaced the coolant in the past year, do so at the same time you replace the hose. (See "Flushing Your System and Changing Your Coolant" earlier in this chapter for instructions.) Some newer engines have cooling systems that need to be bled (see Step 9 in the following list). If your engine falls in this category, the cooling system will contain special bleeder screws. If you're not sure what type of system your vehicle has, check the owner's manual or ask a mechanic before you undertake this job. Now follow these steps: 1. Remove the radiator cap and place the bucket or drain pan under the radiator drain valve (called the petcock). 2. Ford . How do you read odormeter?
